The Erotic Cloth
From the beautiful cloth which is quietly suggestive, to the bold expressions of sexuality, cloth is a message carrier for both for desiring and being desired. Cloth offers those ‘porous, reversible, intimate atmospheres that can be transformative’ as described by Giuliana Bruno. In our liaisons with cloth we become Other since, as in a second skin, we can play out the disguises of the idealized form, and the imaginary of our hidden selves. Drape, fold, touch and feel – all are qualities which are embedded in any discussion surrounding cloth. The materiality of cloth allows for the nuanced, rather than direct, reading of the body: the shape beneath, the space between, the haptic narrative. Cloth in motion, the sound and smell of cloth. Athena Bellas writes of ‘the emotional, erotic and affective power that the fold of fabric releases…’
The Colloquium ‘The Erotic Cloth’ will explore the ways in which the qualities of cloth to seduce, conceal and reveal have been explored and exploited in art. We look to the explicit and the delicately suggestive to explore the evocations of cloth that encourage the intake of breath, the lingering eye, and the textures of sensation. Whilst we will not shy away from the explicit and overtly sexual, this Colloquium will focus on the aesthetics of cloth to excite or indeed disturb, and the recesses of fabric and material qualities which are seductive and erotic. We invite submission from different practices and in different formats, whether in music, dance, drama, fine art, installation art, digital media or other performance arts, that play out the seduction of cloth.
