The Ever Expanding Boundaries of Knowledge: Defining the Research Business for the 21st Century
Inaugural Lecture by Maria Burke, Professor of Management
In this inaugural speech Professor Burke invites us to consider the creation of new knowledge: As humans we are curious about our world – we strive to know more, to understand more, to be enlightened. Within the higher education context we will consider current and future directions of research. This will be achieved by a discussion of the aims of higher education; the aims of research communities; the impact of technological developments and the ensuing data issues. These data issues have arisen from our thirst for knowledge and it is this new knowledge that allows us to contribute to the enhancement of social, cultural and economic prosperity – to meet the challenges of our technologically driven, interconnected 21st-century life.
