Lesley Millar MBE, Professor of Textile Culture at UCA and curator of many groundbreaking textile exhibitions including ‘Lost in Lace’ at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 2011, which included a major work by Piper Shepard, and ‘Cloth and Memory’ at Salts Mill in 2012 and 2013.

Call for papers
‘Lace: the transgressive thread’ will explore the ways in which lace challenges boundaries, literally or metaphorically. We welcome proposals for papers up to a maximum of 20 minutes from researchers, artists, and writers, addressing the theme of the conference, which might include, but are not limited to:

  • lace as fine art practice
  • innovative materials
  • historical research
  • new concepts
  • international collaborations
  • lace and politics
  • subversive lace
  • the global lace trade

Potential speakers should submit a proposed title, an abstract of 250 words (maximum), their name, address, email address and telephone number, together with a short CV. Proposals should be emailed to with the subject heading LRNC and your name (e.g. LRNC J Smith).

Submissions should be received by 31 January 2014. Speakers will be notified whether they have been successful or not by late February 2014.

It is anticipated that the chosen papers will be published after the conference in some form.
